Robot In Place Of Student In School: Technology sometimes comes in various forms to help. While on one hand there is a debate going on whether technology and AI have more advantages or disadvantages, this case has presented a different example. Actually, a child who could not go to school due to his illness has been replaced by a robot and is joining the class in place of the student. This is preventing the loss of the child’s studies and without going to school physically, he is not missing any class.
Where is the case
This case is from South-West London. Howard, a 12-year-old boy here, has cancer. Last December, he was diagnosed with cancer in his right arm. He has been undergoing chemotherapy since January. He is unable to go to school due to his medical condition. He has to undergo chemotherapy every week and due to this his attendance in school has dropped to less than 50 percent.
Robot becomes friend
12-year-old Howard studies in a school in Twickenham. Since this robot came into his life, Howard’s life has changed a bit and amidst the pain and struggle, one of his worries (of not being able to go to school) has been reduced. Now this robot named ‘AV Howard’ goes to school as his electronic double and attends classes.
Talks as well as takes notes
This audio-visual robot is an interactive avatar. With its help, Howard attends classes from home or hospital. Through this, Howard speaks in class, listens to the teacher, takes notes and sees with his own eyes whatever is happening there. In this way, Howard stays at home but still becomes a part of every class.
Teachers and students are also being given robot training so that they can help the real Howard in taking lessons with the help of AV Howard i.e. with the help of a robot.
Friends help out
With the help of the in-built camera in this robot, Howard can see every activity happening in the class. He can talk to the teachers through its speaker. According to the BBC report, Howard, who is suffering from the pain of tumor, finds this help very important because he used to worry a lot about school. His friends also help their friend by taking AV Howard from one class to another so that he can attend every class.
The trust helped
Howard has been provided this robot by Chartwell Children’s Cancer Trust. This charity Momentum helps children and their families who are suffering from a serious illness. They hope that many children can be helped with robot technology.
Emma Searle, family support manager at Momentum, says they find out what a child and their family need most and try to provide that. In Howard’s case, it was education.
